Have you ever wondered how you could save money on clothes for your children? Look, shopping throughout the year for kids clothes can truly get expensive. Especially as a mama of 5, I know what it’s like to go into the store and spend easily hundreds of dollars on clothes each trip. It seems as though my children grow like weeds. As soon as we purchase new clothes, someone is growing out are there clothes. Therefore, I have developed ways to strategically shop from my family without breaking the bank.

Believe it or not, I have developed a way to purchase brand new clothes for almost 90% cheaper than retail. Yes, I have starting shopping at the thrift stores for the past 3 years and have literally saved thousands of dollars! It’s truly easier than what it seems. You can buy brand new clothes from the thrift store. If it’s not brand new, it’s relatively in great condition at an affordable price.

Get Passed The Stigma

I get it, many people frown upon shopping at the thrift store nowadays. I know this because I did it initially. The old me 3 years ago, with 4 children would never even consider shopping second hand. However, since then I have become frugal and loving every bit of it!

With time comes new perspectives. Nevertheless, I have found the benefit of shopping at the thrift store instead of a high priced retailers. I have literally saved thousands of dollars shopping at the thrift stores and I promised you this is a new way of life.

The biggest reason I started shopping at the thrift store is that I realize that I was spending entirely too much money on clothes that my keys were going to wear for a matter of weeks. Let’s be real, kids grow like crazy. I found myself buying clothes extremely big so that they can grow into the clothes. However, that only lasted so long.

That’s when my loving husband encouraged me to consider the thrift stores. I literally hesitated and felt some type of way because I didn’t like the thought of purchasing other people’s clothing. However, it wasn’t until I walked into my local Goodwill store and seen it first hand for myself. The store was clean and organized. Trust me, I cannot shop in chaos. The store was very inviting. I quickly looked around and saw brand new tags on most of the items. I couldn’t believe it!

Decide What More Important

I need to decide what was more important to my family. Whether it was Byam brand clothing at a price that we could not afford or save money on clothes for our children. I chose the latter. I need to learn how to save money on clothes because let’s face it, with 5 children clothes shopping is not cheap. However, I needed to get out of my own head and get comfortable with the mindset of shopping at the thrift stores.
Furthermore, once I truly got real with myself that’s when my perspective changed.

I started shopping at the thrift store and it literally changed our life. We started saving so much more. We were able to have more by spending less. I know it sounds cliche however, it’s our truth. It seems as though we begin living a new life. I guess that’s sort of true because this new frugal life is more rewarding. We are no longer bound to brands and labels. In fact, we are still able to purchase all of those top brands and more for 90% less! Trust me, a lot of what we purchase are all in excellent condition. Many people have no clue about the possibilities that exist in shopping more frugal.

Here’s What I do

1. Shop Ahead of Time

In raising a large family, I most certainly like to be prepared for the unknown. In doing so, I usually buy ahead of time. This helps me tremendously because I am able to purchase items for future seasons. There’s a benefit to this because you can truly purchase items out of season for future seasons. In doing so, you could truly save money on clothing items for your family. However, I have noticed that in the long run, I had the tendency to waste money this way.

2. Shop When Absolutely Necessary

The reason why I started wasting money shopping ahead of time was that I would forget the items that I purchased the previous season. I would forget that in my garage I had storage bins full of brand new items that I had stashed away for the future. Therefore, I have learned a new way. The new way that I started implementing that allows me to save on clothes, is to buy when you absolutely need it the items. I know it sounds a little bit backward however, it could truly help you save money down the road. By way of doing this, you are not buy out of necessity. Often, buying ahead of time can lead to shopping binges. Yes, I said binges because oftentimes when shopping we buy more than what is actually needed.

3. Pass Old Clothes Down

Passing clothes down to the next child is the top way to save money on clothes. Not only are you purchasing clothes at a discounted price of up to 90% off but you are also decreasing the number of clothes that are needed. In my case, I have three daughters and two sons. I literally have storage bins in my garage labeled with their names on it because my girl’s clothes easily get passed down to the next growing girl and the same goes for my sons.

4. Sale Your Old Clothes Online

Once you start saving money on clothes, you’ll start having an abundance of clothes once your children grow out of them. This happened to me. Once all of my children started to grow out of their clothes and I could no longer pass down the clothes, I’d begin looking for ways to recycle their old clothing.

That’s when I came across the popular reselling app POSHMARK. I have created an account using this app to start selling back our thrift store clothes. You wouldn’t believe how remarkable this is. I have literally sold the clothes that we purchased from the thrift store at the same price that I purchased the items. It’s truly a win-win! It’s free to create an app and to sell your items on this platform. They do charge a relatively inexpensive flat-rate fee. The buyer usually pays for their own shipping and handling as well. You could also purchase clothes on this app. It’s more like an online thrift store where many people are reselling their goods.
